Multimedia II: Week 10

For my last few movies i am not taking my moms advice on which to watch because i haven’t enjoyed the last two movies she chose one bit. I watched Platoon this week and it was just sad. This movie is about the war going on in Vietnam. Social implications are shown all throughout this movie. One example would be when O’Neil insists that the new troops go out instead of those troops that are close to the end of their tour even though he knows they will probably be ambushed. Another example would be when Taylor passes the night watch over to Junior, a soldier who is ranked above him but who falls asleep while on watch. Their unit is attacked and even though Taylor had already passed the night watch over to Junior he is still blamed for the deaths because he can’t speak up over who is higher than him. Another example is when one of the soldiers picks on a mentally retarded boy by shooting at his feet. He thinks he has power over the child just because he is a soldier. I believe anyone who watches this movie will get a small glimpse into what actually went on during this war but will never be able to fully understand the capacity of what these soldiers endured. In the end one of the soldiers says he will never be able to leave Vietnam but he will have to find some sort of purpose in life. I believe this statement is true for any veteran because they can never unsee what they have witnessed but have to find a way to get through every day and leave those memories behind.
